Reporting Nursing Home Abuse

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) investigates quality of care issues, such as allegations of actual or potential harm to patients, patient rights, infection control, and medication errors. The Department also investigates allegations or harm or potential harm due to an unsafe physical (building) environment. If seniors and nursing home residents are indicating they are being abused, always be sure to listen to them and take their complaints seriously. More importantly, recognize that residents are often unable to voice their concerns or complain about abuse and neglect. So, if you suspect abuse or neglect, speak to the nursing home staff, physicians, or administrators immediately. If they fail to address your concerns, call the IDPH Central Complaint Registry Hotline – 800-252-4343. Please visit http://dph.illinois.gov/topics-services/health-care-regulation/complaints for more information about reporting nursing home abuse or filing a complaint.
